Ruf: German company that grew to great heights
Despite being most known for its association with Porsche, Ruf Automobile as an interesting history of its own.
The brand was established in 1939 in Pfaffenhausen, Bavaria, Germany.
It was founded as “Auto Ruf” by Alois Ruf Sr as a service garage and, eventually, a gas station.
Alois Sr’s experimentation with his own car designs had a massive impact on his son, Alois Jr.
In 1960, the son began restoring Porsche cars out of his father’s garage.
Sadly, Alois Sr died in 1974, leaving the business to his son.

And this is where the legendary association with Porsche began.
In 1975, a year after Sr’s passing, Alois Ruf Jr produced his first Ruf-tuned Porsche 911, and in 1978, the company released the 911 SCR, a non-turbo Porsche.
The naturally aspirated, 3.2-liter engine produced 217HP, and it quickly became popular.
Ruf Yellowbird takes flight
1987 saw the company produce one of the most famous feats of any automotive company, ever.
That year, Ruf released the bright yellow CTR, which gained the nickname “Yellowbird.”
Based on the 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2, the CTR turned heads in a big way.
And the biggest head-turner was yet to come.
In 1987, a test was organised at Volkswagen’s Ehra Lessien testing facility.

Nine supercars were invited, including a Porsche 959, a Lamborghini Countach, and a Ferrari Testarossa.
The German brand’s CTR was the only car to reach 211mph – in 1987.
Since then, the company has evolved into building its own cars with its own components.
Although they still base the cars on Porsche designs.
YouTuber takes revealing HQ tour
A YouTuber named Larry Chen has now had the opportunity of a lifetime – to tour the North American Headquarters.
Based in Miami, the Bavarian company’s HQ is home to some of their most legendary models.
Larry was given an exclusive tour by Esteban Larranaga, the official Account Executive for North America.
He explains that the North American market is actually the biggest market for the marque’s cars.
Larranaga believes that Miami is a very accessible spot, because it services their markets very well – it is also very accessible to Europe, too.
Esteban also breaks down how Ruf became an actual manufacturer.
Essentially, they would receive the “body-in-white” from Porsche, which is just the shell of the car.
Then, it would develop their own drivetrain and other parts.
Larry is then given a tour of the facility, which showcases an incredibly array of the German company’s cars.
In fact, the North American HQ has a car from every generation of production.
To their immense credit, the Bavarian brand has managed to preserve its history incredibly well.
And the cars are amazing!
