The $1.6 billion Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta features a one-of-a-kind roof design.
Opened in 2017 to replace the Georgia Dome, the Benz is home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.
It’s hosted many notable sporting events over the years, with more on the way.
But it’s the roof of this stadium that really grabs your attention.

The history of the Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta
When it comes to displays of luxury, nothing quite compares to a huge building.
In most cases, we’re used to seeing this with mansions.

Of course, we’ve seen a lot of amazing houses over the years, whether they be owned by Lionel Messi, are Ferrari-inspired, or appear in iconic movies from the 1990s.
But sports stadiums also hold their own in the ‘Which building looks like it cost the most’ contest.
And the Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, exemplifies that perfectly.
Opened up in 2017, the stadium has gone on to host several sporting events, including Super Bowl LIII in 2019.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, as it’s set to host several matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Super Bowl LXII in 2028.
But it’s not what goes on inside the stadium that has gotten a lot of people talking online.
In fact, it’s the retractable roof.
A roof with a view
The roof consists of eight translucent panels, each positioned on two parallel rails.
While one rail moves the panel, the other stabilizes it.

To close the roof takes slightly less time than it does to open it.
Bill Johnson, the architect who designed the roof, said he was inspired by the Roman Pantheon, as Sports Illustrated reported.
When retracted fully, the opening is 110,000 square feet of fresh air.
It looks somewhere between a lotus flower and the sun.
But seeing it in motion as it closes is a real treat, too.
It’s a testament to architectural vision and the ingenuity of American construction.
