The next-generation version of Apple CarPlay has been revealed by the company at its 2022 World Wide Developer conference.

A big upgrade from the existing version, the all-new version of CarPlay will not just integrate your iPhone into the infotainment system, but every one of your car’s screens.

Working directly with automakers, Apple is making sure the technology will work seamlessly in a range of cars.

Regardless what screen setup eligible cars will have, the new Apple CarPlay system will be tailored to that vehicle’s screen setup.

The instrument cluster is undoubtedly where the biggest changes can be seen.

A number of screen configurations will be offered, with modern and traditional instrument displays in a range of colors and styles.

Maps and other vehicle info will also be able to be incorporated into the display as well.

Along with this you’ll be afforded more customization on the vehicle’s other screens.

Functions such as remote garage door operation will be able to join other typical iOS widgets, including those for weather and time.

The car’s climate control functions will also be operational within the Apple ecosystem.

It’s basically a total iOS takeover of your car.

“Cars have changed a lot, with larger-sized screens and more of them throughout the car,” Emily Schubert, Apple’s senior manager for car experience engineering, says.

“There’s an opportunity for iPhone to play an even more important role. We’ve been working with automakers to reinvent the in-car experience across all of the driver’s screens.

“No matter what type of unique screen shapes or layouts you may have, this next generation of CarPlay feels like it was made specifically for your car.”

Apple also confirmed at the conference that it has already worked with Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault and Volvo to integrate the tech in their vehicles.

The first vehicles to feature next-gen Apple CarPlay will be revealed in late 2023.
