The Mercedes G-Wagen 4×4 Squared is back – and it’s a jacked-up beast

It boasts insane off-road capability and a big V8.

The hardcore Mercedes G-Wagen 4×42 is finally back, boasting insane off-road capability and a big V8.

While the last 4×42 model was based on the lesser G550, this new extreme G-Class comes based on the full-fat AMG G63.

That means it’ll be one of the last applications of the twin-turbo AMG V8, making 585HP (430kW) in this guise. That’s a big increase over the last 4×42‘s 416HP (320kW).

The greatest standout feature of this jacked-up G-Wagen is its portal axles, which make the insane ride height and ground clearance possible.

Indeed, this gives it 351mm (13.8in) of clearance – 109.2mm (4.3in) more than the standard G63, but 83.8mm (3.3in) less than the old G550 4×42.

But making it better to drive on-road is the new G-Wagen’s independent suspension; on older models, solid axles featured.

It can also wade through up to 910mm (36in) of water and can climb up grades of up to 45 degrees.

The model will be incredibly customizable, with a total of 40 colors on offer.

There’s an array of carbon fiber exterior trim everywhere you look – from the roof spoiler to the wheel arches, and the door protectors to the spare wheel cover.

Inside, it can also be extensively customized with diamond-stitched Nappa leather and carbon fiber trim through the G Manufaktur program.

Ambient lighting in the air vents and a digital mirror are two new features for the 4×42 as well.

Mercedes is yet to confirm how much the G63 4×42 will cost, or when it will be available.

However, the old G550 4×42 started at $227,300 to give you some idea of what it’ll cost.

All Mercedes has confirmed is it won’t be available for long.

Toni Mäntele, head of product management for G-Class, confirmed at its reveal for G-Class Private Lounge members: “It’s only available for a limited time.”
