AI startup Figure recently shared a demo of its first humanoid robot engaged in a real-time conversation, thanks to ChatGPT and OpenAI.

The video showcased the robot conversing with a person in real-time while performing chores and menial tasks.

If someone from the future asks when did the first sign of the robot apocalypse start, show them this video.

Humanoid robotic development has been moving at a snail’s pace for a few decades, but it seems all that is about to change, thanks to generative AI.

This new collaboration between Figure and OpenAI looks the most promising, in terms of seeing a working humanoid robot.

The Robotics developer is backed by major tech players like OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

The Figure AI robot seems to be set to be in direct competition with Elon Musk’s Tesla and their Optimus humanoid robot.

According to the company, the robot known as ‘Figure 01’ engages in “speech-to-speech” reasoning using OpenAI’s pre-trained multimodal model, VLM.

It uses the model to understand images and texts and relies entirely on vocal communication for responses.

The company claims that every behavior in the video is based on system learning.

This means that the ChatGPT powered robot is real and not just being programmed to act in a pre-determined manner.

However, it will be hard to verify these claims without seeing the humanoid in a public setting and testing its responses.

So far, the ChatGPT powered robot seems to be just one step behind Ameca, another humanoid AI robot.

The female humanoid robot seems to be more advanced than the OpenAI robot.

Ameca can even perform uncanny celebrity impressions, including Morgan Freeman and Elon Musk.

However, the Figure AI robot can also learn a task just by watching others do it.

So, we might just be watching the start of a robot uprising or the advancement of human technology.
