How a modified Toyota Land Cruiser reached a record-breaking speed of 370 km/h

For an SUV, that's mighty impressive.

  • Even though it’s based on a ‘normal’ production vehicle, it is heavily modified

This is a Toyota Land Cruiser that’s capable of reaching 370 km/h, which makes it faster than most supercars on the planet.

And believe it or not, this is an official Toyota vehicle, not the product of a tuning company.

This ultra-fast Land Cruiser, dubbed Land Speed Cruiser, was unveiled by Toyota for the SEMA show, which is a car show designed primarily to showcase vehicles exactly like this one.

Most of the vehicles unveiled at SEMA each year are made with aftermarket parts by aftermarket brands, that’s the case with the Chevy truck with six wheels, for example.

By contrast, everything you see here is custom-made by Toyota.

Specifically, by the Toyota Motorsport Technical Center, which is the branch that also makes NASCAR cars for the brand.

Virtually everything underwent modification.

The original interior was stripped to the bone and all the bits that were deemed redundant were scrapped.

The only things remaining are the driver’s seat with FIA-spec harnesses, a roll cage, and an instrument cluster.

The engine is a heavily modified 5.7-liter V8, which is now fitted with new pistons, forged connecting rods along with two enormous turbos Garrett the size of a soccer ball.

Thanks to the new modifications, the truck is now delivering nearly 2,000 horsepower.

It puts out 1,972 horsepower, to be exact.

As a cherry on top of the cake, Toyota also gave the Land Cruiser new shock absorbers and springs, and new wheels with custom-made tires courtesy of Michelin.

Toyota is famous for creating vehicles that can go just about anywhere, and climb any surface, no matter how steep or tough it might be.

As it turns out, they also know how to build fast trucks.
