Banned in the United States but legal everywhere else is this fascinating Hyundai technology is straight out of the future.
Hyundai is going through a really great period at the moment, with some amazing cars coming out, such as the Ioniq range.
It also showcased some amazing technology, such as this amazing feature that replaces the traditional side mirrors on a car.
This is an innovative retracting camera system that’s designed to enhance rear visibility. Sadly, while legal around the world, that currently isn’t the case in the United States.

The side mirrors were filed as a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Hyundai hopes it will improve the visibility of a vehicle without compromising its design.
It all fits snugly into a body panel, which keeps the system firmly out of sight when it’s no longer in use on the car.
That can lead to a very sleek profile for a car, and remove the need to fold mirrors in tight parking spots.

When deployed, the cameras are in a position similar to your traditional side mirrors.
There is also every chance that these cameras are better than a typical side mirror.
They include a wider angle as well as enhanced clarity, particularly useful when reversing or making lane changes.
As the cameras can retract flush into the car’s body, they can also make it more aerodynamic.
That will be particularly useful should they be used on an electric car.
Hyundai uses a rotating link mechanism that controls how the camera extends and retracts.
This has the bonus of also reducing wind noise.
The new cameras are a subtle change, but a very good one.
However, you won’t find them in the United States anytime soon, as they are banned.

This is because of a very particular US law.
Despite advances in technology, old-school mirrors are still legally required on American cars.
Which is why Tesla Cybertruck owners have to buy mirror delete kits, and those in Europe do not.
So even though Hyundai’s cameras are very clever, those in the United States are unable to utilize them.
