By now, most people may be familiar with the story of Irv Gordon, an American guy who bought a new Volvo P1800 in 1966 and then drove it for millions of miles.
Literally, in his case, because by the time he stopped driving, he’d already put 3 million miles under the car’s tires.
At one point, he tried to ‘sell’ the car back to Volvo.
But you’ll never guess what they said to that, and what happened after.

How Irv Gordon put 3 million miles under the belt of his P1800
Irv Gordon, an American high school teacher from New York, bought a new Volvo P1800 back in June 1966.
For 52 years, Gordon maintained and drove his now-iconic P1800 for 3 million miles, a record that still stands today.
Back when he bought the car for $4,150, he returned after the first weekend for its first service and he’d already done 1,500 miles.
By 2013, Irv finally hit the 3 million mile record in his still-original car from 1966.

This is what happened when he tried selling the car back to Volvo
While many know the car’s mileage, fewer know what happened when Gordon tried selling it back to the manufacturer.
In an interview with New York Post in 2016, Gordon revealed some juicy details about this story.
“I offered it to Volvo for $1 a mile,” Gordon laughed.
“Obviously, they didn’t take me up on it.”
Despite the company’s polite refusal, they were extremely impressed by Gordon’s careful ownership, and they decided to do something about it.

Volvo gifted him a new car – a 780 Coupe – to celebrate the first million-mile mark.
The irony is that Gordon ended up putting 450,000 miles on that new 780 Coupe before selling it.
And he managed to do it while also driving his P1800 daily, somehow.
When Irv passed away in November 2018, his P1800 was donated to Volvo, and the company decided to turn it into a museum piece.
The final recorded mileage, which at this point will remain unchanged, is exactly 3,260,257 miles driven.
