This 2005 Porsche Carrera GT was just sold on eBay for $5 million, which is a lot of money for a car that was originally priced at $440,000.

That’s great news for the seller and also great news for the seller, but – interestingly – that’s completely beside the point.

For once, the protagonist of the transaction isn’t the buyer or the seller.

It isn’t even the Porsche Carrera GT that was sold – it’s all about the platform.

One of the main reasons this car continues to go up in value

There’s a surprisingly simple but definitely underrated reason why the Porsche Carrera GT keeps going up in value.

If you Google something like ‘best-sounding cars’ of all time, the Porsche Carrera GT’s 5.7-liter V10 will almost always be mentioned, and the GT will always make the top 3 or top 5, and definitely the top 10.

It sounds simple, but it isn’t.

Now that the industry is going electric, collectors are after analog vehicles.

And there’s nothing more analog than the sound of an engine, considering all EVs are either completely silent or, if they’re not, it’s because of a fake exhaust note that’s 100 percent fabricated.

This, believe it or not, is one of the reasons why the Carrera GT is so valuable.

This is a new record… but for eBay, not for the Carrera GT

This 2005 Porsche Carrera GT sold for a hair under $5 million, which is $1+ million under the record for this supercar, but still a lot of cash.

However, even though this car is special, this particular sale marks a milestone for the platform it was sold on: eBay.

This market has become fiercely competitive, crowded by legacy auction houses like Broad Arrow, RM Sotheby’s, and Mecum, alongside digital-first platforms like Bring a Trailer and Doug DeMuro’s Cars & Bids.

In this case, eBay just signaled a major transition from ‘just’ an online platform to an end-to-end automotive transaction ecosystem.

Every step – including title verification, secure payment, tax paperwork, vehicle transport, and so on – is now integrated into the process.

This Porsche Carrera GT was the first vehicle ever processed directly through eBay’s new Secure Purchase system.

A third-party company made this possible

This was also made possible through a third-party company that is now fully part of eBay.

Not long ago, eBay acquired Caramel, an automotive transaction platform originally founded in Los Angeles.

Caramel automates and digitizes the most complex administrative pain points that are an essential part of these expensive transactions.

Secure escrow, payments, automated DMV paperwork, logistics, and so on.

In-person auctions will continue to play a key role, partly because some people are just naturally more comfortable doing this face-to-face, but also because there’s a romantic element to it – if you like.

But, having said that, digital ‘gavels’ will become the norm.

And clearly eBay is ready for that.
