The 1965 Corvette is powered by Tesla Model S batteries
Downey’s 1965 Corvette, originally powered by a 327-cubic-inch V8, underwent a remarkable transformation.
The original internal combustion engine and automatic transmission were replaced with two alternating current motors, making it an electric powerhouse under the hood.
Powering this Robert Downey Jr electric Corvette are seven Tesla Model S battery modules, giving the car an estimated range of 100 miles on a full charge.
Despite the swap, the car’s outward appearance remains remarkably authentic.

Even the original exhaust tips were left in place, fooling the eye of any casual observer.
The build was featured on an episode of Downey’s Dream Cars, where the craftsmanship earned high praise.

Robert Downey Jr wants to blend sustainability with style
For Downey, the project was about more than just making a statement.
The Hollywood superstar wanted to show that sustainability can go hand in hand with style and performance, and proving that a classic car electric vehicle swap can be just as thrilling as the original.

EVs in general offer a range of benefits.
They save drivers money over time, eliminating the need for gasoline and reducing maintenance costs like oil changes.
Environmentally, they produce zero tailpipe emissions, improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gases.
While battery production does require mining, studies show that EVs still require much fewer resources over their lifespan compared to fossil fuels, paying off their carbon footprint within two years.
In any case, this electrified Corvette managed to raise $77,000 for Robert Downey Jr’s FootPrint Coalition, which is an organization dedicated to investing in sustainability-focused companies.
Given the size of his car collection, there’s probably more cars coming up for auction soon.
