BAIC has produced an off-roader that looks exactly like two of the most iconic SUVs ever made until you look under the hood

BAIC has revealed a new off-roader that feels very familiar at first glance.

It borrows heavily from two of the most recognizable SUVs ever built.

However, the real story is not what it looks like, but what powers it.

Because once you look under the hood, the whole thing shifts direction.

It looks like a G-Class and a Wrangler, but that’s not the surprising part

At first glance, the BAIC BJ81 looks like someone mashed together a Mercedes-Benz G-Class and a Jeep Wrangler and called it a day.

The shape is boxy, the stance is tall, and the whole thing screams ‘I go off-road’ even if it’s just parked at the shops.

The details don’t exactly hide the inspiration either.

Up front, you’ve got a five-slat grille and round headlights, which feel very Wrangler-coded.

Then along the sides, there are chunky wheel arches, side steps, and even red brake calipers trying to add a bit of attitude.

Around the back, it keeps piling it on with a spare wheel stuck to the tailgate and taillights that look suspiciously Defender-like.

So yeah, it looks tough.

Like, properly tough.

The kind of SUV you’d expect to have a massive engine and sound like it’s ready to climb a mountain at any moment.

Except… it doesn’t.

Instead of a big engine, the BJ81 is expected to run a 1.5-liter four-cylinder as part of a range-extender hybrid setup.

In simple terms, the petrol engine helps charge the battery rather than doing all the heavy lifting itself.

There’s no official power figure yet, but it’s safe to say this isn’t exactly trying to out-muscle the SUVs it looks like.

BAIC is pushing its off-roaders in a very different direction

And honestly, that twist says a lot about where cars like this are heading.

Even the most rugged-looking SUVs are starting to move toward hybrid and electric setups, whether people expect it or not.

BAIC is basically mixing old-school looks with new-school tech.

You still get the tough design, the big tyres, and the whole off-road vibe, but underneath it’s doing things in a much more efficient way.

It’s less about raw power and more about how far you can go without burning through fuel.

That might sound a bit backwards at first, especially when the outside looks ready for a desert rally.

But it actually makes sense.

A lot of buyers want the look of a hardcore 4×4 without the cost or fuel bill that usually comes with it.

Whether the BJ81 can actually back up its looks with real off-road ability is still a bit of a question mark.

Either way, it’s clear this isn’t trying to be a straight-up rival to the icons it copies, even if it really wants you to think it is at first glance.
