A billionaire’s plans to launch an exact replica of the Titanic are moving forward.

The date has even been set for the maiden voyage.

This incredible project is the vision of Australian billionaire Clive Palmer.

And the ship is set to recreate the originally intended route of the original Titanic.

Palmer’s vision of a Titanic replica gets closer

Aussie billionaire Clive Palmer has a pretty unique ambition – he wants to create an exact replica of the RMS Titanic.

More than 115 years after the famous maritime disaster, Palmer wants to recreate the originally intended journey, from Southampton in the UK, to New York City.

For more than a decade, the businessman and former member of the Australian House of Representatives has teased plans to create Titanic II.

The plans were first announced in 2012, but so far, nothing concrete has been done yet.

But Palmer has now confirmed that construction is set to begin this year.

His company, Blue Star, is currently seeking tenders from prospective builders.

According to the company’s website, the ship will begin its voyage in Southampton, then head to Cherbourg, France, before sailing to New York.

What is fascinating is that the ship will be an exact replica of the RMS Titanic.

That being said, it will be fully equipped with enough lifeboats and a modern navigation system… Just in case

Speaking to Rolling Stone Magazine, Palmer outlined his ambitions for the project.

“You’ll remember, in the movie, you had the guy in the crow’s nest saying, ‘Iceberg!’

“That was because from the bridge, you couldn’t see over the bow. We can’t do that today. So we had to put a whole new deck in the Titanic.

“Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port, and experiencing her unique majesty. Titanic II will be the ship where those dreams come true.”

The most famous maritime tragedy in history

Of course, the story of the original RMS Titanic is almost universally known.

The ship, owned and operated by White Star Line, was built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

What most people don’t know is that the Titanic was actually part of a trio of ships.

It was one of three Olympicclass ocean liners built for White Star Line.

The other two were the RMS Olympic – built in 1912 as well – and HMS Britannic, built in 1915.

After leaving Southampton at noon on April 10th, 1912, the ship made several stops.

It docked in Cherbourg in France, and Queenstown (now Cobh), County Cork, Ireland.

At 1.30pm on April 11th, Titanic began her fateful voyage across the Atlantic.

She tragically struck an iceberg in the early hours of April 15th, 1912.

It remains one of the deadliest civil maritime tragedies in history.

Clive Palmer will be hoping that his replica is able to achieve what the original could not.
