BMW has integrated AI into its quality checks in vehicle assembly that can generate an individual inspection every 57 seconds when a new car rolls off the production line.
BMW makes a new vehicle once every 57 seconds, and with so many cars, it’s important to be strict with quality control.
Alongside the marque’s pre-existing quality control measures, it has now introduced artificial intelligence.
The system makes things more efficient, faster, and more reliable.

BMW has a new AI system that checks each and every car
Artificial intelligence technology is being implemented in all sorts of ways across multiple industries, from autonomous helper bots, like Tesla’s Optimus robots, to fixing stop-and-go traffic in Boston.
Now, BMW has announced it has introduced artificial intelligence into its quality control department as a ‘quality booster’ to help ensure each vehicle is perfect when it leaves the factory.

The software has been developed at BMW Group Plant Regensburg as part of its ‘GenAI4Q’ pilot project.
The new technology is able to deliver ‘tailored inspection recommendations for the approximately 1,400 vehicles manufactured each day’ at the plant.
“The use of artificial intelligence supports the digital transformation of BMW Group production towards an intelligently connected factory – for example, we are using AI for quality control in vehicle assembly,” said head of BWM Group Plant Regensburg Armin Ebner.
“In this way, we are optimizing our production processes and creating added value for our products and, ultimately, for our customers.”
The smart system makes quality checks more efficient
BMW takes the quality of its cars very seriously – each vehicle made at its factory is subject to numerous quality tests throughout the production process.
Then shortly before leaving, vehicles undergo a final inspection: trained specialists examine each finished vehicle once more to ensure it meets premium quality standards’.

The carmaker says that virtually no two of its vehicles are alike, as each is made to customers’ specifications.
“Different types of drive trains are flexibly manufactured on one production line – ranging from vehicles with internal combustion engines to plug-in hybrids and fully-electric models, as well as countless model and equipment variants,” the marque explained.
And this is where the artificial intelligence comes in handy, as it is able to generate an individual inspection catalogue for each specific customer vehicle.
How smart is that?
