BMW has made it clear that sedans are here to stay, reaffirming their importance at a time when SUVs dominate the automotive market.
Despite crossovers and larger vehicles accounting for half of America’s 20 best-selling models last year, the German automaker insists that the traditional four-door remains central to its identity.
While many rivals have scaled back or abandoned their sedan lineups, BMW continues to double down on them.
The company is not only keeping its existing sedan range but also preparing to expand it with new models.

BMW offers one of the most comprehensive sedan lineups
Oliver Heilmer, who heads BMW’s Neue Klasse design language and previously led Mini’s design, stressed in an interview with Australia’s GoAuto that sedans remain ‘the core of the brand.’
He explained that while some may have expected the body style to fade, especially given the rising popularity of SUVs, demand has held steady.
“A couple of years ago, you might have thought the sedan is something that might disappear. But it’s quite stable, to be honest,” he said.
“Now it’s something where we are setting a statement. We have said BMW is standing for sedans. A small, sporty, elegant, mid-sized sedan is the core of the brand.”

The Bavarian automaker continues to offer one of the most comprehensive sedan lineups in the luxury segment, with staples like the 3 Series, 4 Series Gran Coupe, 5 Series, and 7 Series all strong competitors.
BMW’s styling direction will become more subtle
More additions are on the horizon.
Following the launch of the iX3 SUV, the carmaker will roll out the electric i3 sedan, followed by a refreshed 3 Series with traditional combustion engines.
Updates to the 5 Series and 7 Series are also planned, alongside new performance-oriented variants.
Beyond its model strategy, BMW is also refining its design philosophy.
Heilmer revealed that the company’s styling direction will soon become ‘way more subtle.’
The brand’s signature kidney grille will remain a focal point, but its shape and scale will vary more than in recent years.

This is a sign that the oversized designs seen on recent models, like the i7, could be toned down.
It seems like in an era where SUVs dominate, BMW still believes that the classic sporty four-door still has a loyal audience.
The German carmaker also seems to have faith in ICE cars, recently stating that gas engines will never disappear from the road.
