This woman has spent the past three years as a crew worker on a Costa world cruise ship, and she’s seen the best and worst of what it has to offer.

Life at sea can be fun, and you get to see so a lot different countries while not having to unpack and repack your suitcase a bunch of times.

There are, of course, a load of perks that people associate with cruise ships.

But there are also a couple of things that make the experience, well, challenging.

The key benefit of living on a cruise ship

Living on a cruise ship is becoming a thing.

Millionaires do it, but the number of remote employees and retirees that choose this lifestyle is also growing.

Some absolutely love it, saying they’ve managed to live out their dream life at sea, but we sometimes forget there’s more than just guests on board these cruising hotels.

Few people actually talk about what life at sea is like for people who work on board.

Irene is a young woman who’s been working on a Costa world cruise ship, pretty much continuously, for four years.

Traveling is the first and most obvious perk, as she’s been lucky enough to see every continent apart from Antarctica.

But there’s something else that most people wouldn’t even think of.

According to Irene, who works as a beautician, living and working on a cruise ship allows you to save money quite quickly.

“They give you a salary, and room and board, and you’re working most of the time, so basically you end up going entire days, sometimes weeks, without spending a cent,” she told supercarblondie.com.

“Obviously when we’re at port and I go check out whichever place I’ve just arrived at, that’s on my own dime, but I don’t really have that many opportunities to spend money, so that’s great for my bank account.”

The flip side of this particular coin is that the hours are long and the job as a crew worker can be stressful.

“We work literally every day. We get hours off scattered across more days, but never entire days off during the cruise,” she explained.

The worst part of living on a cruise ship

Lack of privacy can be challenging, because workers often share small cabins between them as most of the space on board the Costa world cruise ship is reserved for guests.

But, according to Irene, that’s not the worst part.

She says the worst part is the schedule, which is jammed and super tight.

“Absolutely every moment of my day is scheduled. And you can never be late, not even by a minute,” she explained.

Irene admitted that being a crew worker, or a beautician on board in her case, is a young person’s game, but there are opportunities for growth.

“I don’t think I’ll do this forever, but this working on a cruise ship can open a lot of doors, and a career in this industry is something I’d love to have.”
