After ordering a $1,000 electric boat from China, this Florida son and dad duo have revealed how it’s held up after two years of well-needed modifications.
It’s many people’s dream to start a project with their father and spend years hammering away until there is a boat-load of memories in the bank.
For this son and father duo, they’ve done just that, literally storing years of cherished thoughts on an electric boat.
After two years, this $1,000 knock-off from Alibaba has been transformed, and the boat isn’t the only winner.

Modifying a $1,000 electric boat from China
People have managed to find some incredible things on Chinese marketplaces like Alibaba and Temu, so much so that even Supercar Blondie has bought a Rolls-Royce for just $9,000.
But not every purchase like this works out.
Just like this $1,000 electric boat from China.
Bought by EbikeSchool.com from Alibaba, the aquatic EV was slated to be the ‘cheapest electric boat’ on the internet, and it was quickly evident why as it chugged around a lake in Florida at a snail’s pace.
But they weren’t going to let a bit of speed spoil their fun.

The YouTube channel is populated by a son and father duo who have been making some well-needed upgrades to the electric boat, including a change to the motor and the addition of solar panels.
It also needed a massive clean, as the used parts were in rather scruffy and moldy conditions.
Two years down the line, and they’ve revealed how the project has been going.
All hands on deck made a job well done
In a new upload to the channel, the nearly finished article has been revealed.
The electric boat, now named Sunny Side Up, thanks to the roof-mounted solar panels, even had the ceremonial champagne bottle smashed over its hull.
The new motor improved the speed fivefold, but it also meant a new rudder was needed as rust had claimed the original, and the steering was rather redundant.
But new parts were easily sourced from Facebook Marketplace, and now it sails like a dream.
“Turned it from a cheap and tragic boat into a reasonably well-made leisure watercraft,” they said.
“My dad described what we had done as ‘like putting an outboard motor on a pie tin.'”

Now, the electric boat can run without ever needing to be charged, and can achieve speeds of around five knots.
While it’s not a patch on actual aquatic EVs, like this flying water taxi, the little boat can do exactly what they need it to, and the family has made magical memories on the way.
