This experienced pilot captured the cockpit view of an F-18 landing in the middle of the ocean, and the postage-stamp precision is truly undefeated.

Landing a plane in heavy winds is always a tough prospect for pilots, but when you have a runway the size of a ship, locating it is only the first hurdle to overcome.

Only then does the real fun start, ensuring to hit the deck at the perfect moment and brake before the end of the runway again.

But out supporting the naval forces around the world are a string of talented pilots who make this type of precision look easy.

F-18 pilot makes landing on a ‘postage stamp’ in the ocean look easy

Much of what many people understand about fighter jets comes straight from the launchpad of Hollywood, thanks to Tom Cruise’s stunts while filming Top Gun and Maverick.

But, as you can imagine, not everything Cruise did in his F-14 was a real depiction of what real-life jets have to go through when out at sea.

In fact, this cockpit view of an F-18 showcases the inch-perfect measurements needed to land safely, and how hard the brakes work to touch down like a cloud of bubbles.

Highlighted in the video at the top of this article, the cockpit view of this pilot shows them cutting through the choppy environment created by the sea, with waves crashing down all around.

With visibility quite low, the ship comes almost out of nowhere, showing how precise the radar readings were to ensure a straight arrival, and it made for a touchdown all too simple for what we can comprehend.

Commenters on YouTube were heavily impressed, too.

“My dad was a Navy fighter pilot and used to say that these landings were like landing on a postage stamp in the middle of the ocean. Hats off to the amazing pilots,” one read.

A second added, “Made that look easy, landing on a platform in rough seas, much respect for those navy pilots!

How fighter jets make these thrilling landings look easy

Jets like the F-18 don’t just impress on the way down, as takeoffs are equally as amazing, as seen by one overhead view of a rapid ascent.

In fact, it takes a whole team to get the fighter jets on and off the ships, with electromagnetic catapults assisting with the takeoff, while ropes attach to the tailhook when landing to bring the planes to a quick halt.

While in the air, it’s all about the pilot, and the fighter jets are capable of performing extremely impressive maneuvers.

But making sure they are aligned with their target is always crucial, as one F-35 pilot revealed that they move at too high speeds to ‘turn’.

So, precision is key, and in conditions like the one above, its mesmerizing what these pilots can do.
