Antarctica isn’t the sort of place you expect to see a giant passenger jet touching down.

The continent is covered in ice, battered by brutal weather, and home to very few runways that resemble anything like a normal airport.

Yet one pilot managed to guide a massive Airbus A340 onto a frozen strip of glacial ice at the bottom of the world.

And the footage of that historic landing still feels almost unreal to watch.

The historic Airbus A340 landing on Antarctic ice

The pilot behind the moment was Captain Carlos Mirpuri, Vice-Chairman of charter airline Hi Fly, who successfully landed an Airbus A340 in Antarctica in 2021.

The flight began in Cape Town, South Africa, before traveling roughly 2,500 nautical miles south toward the frozen continent.

Landing any aircraft in Antarctica is difficult, but doing it in a massive four-engine passenger jet is something else entirely.

An Airbus A340 can weigh up to 275 tons at takeoff, which makes guiding it onto an icy runway a serious challenge.

Unlike traditional airports, the glacial runway used for the landing had no normal approach navigation systems or visual landing aids to help the pilots line things up.

That meant the crew had to rely heavily on preparation and careful flying during the final approach.

Hi Fly’s operations department spent months planning the mission before the aircraft ever left the ground.

“Our operations department conducted several months preparation of this flight and the success of our first landing is testimony to a job well done,” Captain Mirpuri said.

When the jet finally touched down on the ice, it marked the first time an Airbus A340 had ever landed in Antarctica.

That flight opened the door for more Antarctic aviation

This story didn’t end with that single landing.

The successful mission proved that large passenger aircraft could safely operate in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

As a result, Hi Fly continued developing flights to the White Continent in the years that followed.

The route takes travelers from the warm temperatures of Cape Town to Antarctica’s sub-zero conditions in about five hours, giving passengers the rare chance to visit one of the most remote places on the planet.

Then, in 2025, the airline achieved another milestone when it successfully landed an Airbus A330 in Antarctica as well.

Together, the flights show how a moment that once seemed almost impossible is gradually becoming a new chapter in aviation.

Still, seeing a huge Airbus jet settle onto a runway made entirely of ice remains one of the most breathtaking sights in modern flying.
