A bold new vision for a desert supercar is taking shape in the mind of Ford CEO Jim Farley.
He recently revealed that the brand’s next high-performance project may swap racetracks for sand dunes.
Speaking on Bloomberg’s Hot Pursuit! podcast, Farley suggested Ford could build a 1,000-horsepower off-road machine designed for high-speed desert running.
It’s still just an idea, but it has already sparked plenty of excitement and speculation.

A novel desert supercar idea
Ford CEO Jim Farley stressed that this project would not simply copy rivals like Porsche’s 911 Dakar or Lamborghini’s Huracán Sterrato.
He believes Ford can deliver something very different.
“I feel like the supercar market is completely overserved,” Farley said. “People are just buying these cars to invest as if it’s a stock or something.”
His goal is to build cars that thrill drivers in extreme conditions, not just please investors.
The one firm detail he shared was his desire for a 1,000-horsepower hybrid powertrain.
It could come from an electrified version of the 800-hp V8 already in the Mustang GTD.

Other possible features include adjustable suspension, customizable driving modes, and race-ready versions for competition.
Sand, gravel, and off-road ability
The core focus, however, would be on sand, gravel, and high-speed off-road ability.
Ford has the pedigree to back this up.
The company has won legendary events like the Baja 1000, King of the Hammers, Mint 400, Rebelle Rally, and NORRA 1000.
Earlier this year, it even scored a podium finish at the Dakar Rally, one of the toughest races in the world.
That experience feeds into its road cars.
The Ranger Raptor, for example, ran the Baja 1000 with only minimal safety upgrades.

It crossed the finish line in just over 26 hours and then drove back to California.
Lessons from that test made their way into production Raptors.
For now, Farley admits the desert supercar is still only an idea.
But he also said he is ‘thinking really deeply about it,’ and his track record suggests ideas often turn into reality.
If that holds true, Ford’s most radical project yet could soon be tearing across the desert.
