Just a few years after production started, Ford is now reportedly considering scrapping the Ford F-150 Lightning EV pickup truck.

A report from the Wall Street Journal has hinted that after a fire at an aluminum supplier, the company is looking to axe the F-150 Lightning altogether.

Should it decide to end production, the Blue Oval is actively considering producing more affordable EVs using its newest UEV platform.

It would, of course, be quite a shock to see F-150 Lightning production end so suddenly, with the electric pickup only making its debut in 2021.

Why we might see the end of F-150 Lightning production

A report from the Wall Street Journal has given some indication as to why the Blue Oval might cease Lightning production.

In August 2025, CEO Jim Farley announced the new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform.

This aims to deliver more affordable EVs to Ford’s customers.

That would also include a pickup truck that costs $30,000.

That compares to the current starting price of the F-150 Lightning, which is $54,780.

The manufacturer would get these lower EV prices via what it describes as engineering ‘cleverness’.

It will also do so via a streamlining of development.

This, in turn, will reduce the parts count on its vehicles.

That will also save on weight as well as the complexity of each vehicle.

Sales figures for the Ford F-150 Lightning

When it comes to sales, they have been relatively consistent for the F-150 Lightning.

In 2022, they stood at 15,617 for the year and went up to 24,165 in 2023.

In 2024, the company sold 33,510 of the pickups.

At the time of writing in 2025, it has sold 24,577 of them.

Based on that, the Lightning will have sold fewer units than in 2024 but more than in 2022.

That does, though, pale in comparison to the 732,139 main F-Series pickups sold in 2024 by the Blue Oval.

Currently, F-150 Lightning production is halted after a fire at an aluminum supplier.

But with sales not as high as the company would like and the new UEV platform, there is a chance the Blue Oval won’t restart production.

Hopefully, Ford will clarify what is happening in the very near future.
