Ford Mustang GTD ‘Spirit of America’ is the apex of muscle cars
- This is the Spirit of America, a limited-edition iteration of the Mustang GTD
- It puts out 815 horsepower, and has a lot more components made of carbon fiber
- It’ll almost certainly be limited in terms of production

This is a new special-edition Ford Mustang GTD called ‘Spirit of America’.
Unveiled at this year Detroit Auto Show, the Spirit of America is a hardcore version of the GTD, which is already the most powerful Mustang ever made to begin with.
No production figures were provided, but we’re fairly confident production will indeed be limited.
And the price will probably match the exclusivity.

Probably the most extreme production Ford Mustang in existence
The Spirit of America was designed as a tribute to the 1964 Tour de France Automobile race, specifically in the Touring Car category, which is the one Ford used to compete in.
Having said that, this is also a broader celebration of America’s best-selling muscle car.
The vaguely braggadocious name is actually just a reference to the jet-powered land speed record-setting vehicles engineered by the late Craig Breedlove, a professional race car driver that became the first person to break the 500-mph and 600-mph land speed records.
This Spirit of America is fitted with exposed carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser, and a massive wing, but, interestingly, nothing was done to the engine.
After all, the GTD already puts out 825 horsepower from its supercharged V8, so it didn’t really need extra power.
A record-breaking machine.
The Ford Mustang GTD is the most powerful Mustang ever built, by a significant margin.
The 5.2-liter V8 that powers it puts out 815 horsepower, and it is paired to a dual-clutch gearbox.
It is also relatively lightweight, because Ford made extensive use of carbon fiber to build this car.
The GTD is also the fastest American car around the Nürburgring.
This seems trivial, considering the average Mustang GTD owner will probably never drive the car around the ‘Ring, but it isn’t.
Setting records around Germany’s most famous racetrack is a statement.
Just about any and every manufacturer we can think of set a record at some point, from legacy automaker such as Lotus or Porsche, to a British tuner that’s modified a Porsche 911 to make it faster than the factory model.
As for the Spirit of America, Ford hasn’t said anything about availability or pricing, but we can easily predict two things.
It’ll cost a lot of money, and it’ll only be available to U.S. buyers, so it’ll probably never see the ‘Ring.
