Ford has heralded a new ‘Model T moment’ as it announces plans to invest billions in new electric vehicle production, including a new $30,000 electric truck.

The carmaker has vowed to pump $5 billion into a new assembly line and battery production to build EVs.

And first on the list will be an affordable mid-sized electric pickup truck.

For some comparison, the Ford F-150 Lightning has a starting price of about $55,000, meaning this new, as-yet-unamed model could be an absolute game-changer for the carmaker.

Ford is gearing up to launch a $30,000 electric truck

Back in May, General Motors announced it was investing $888 million into its New York plant to build next-gen V8 engine production.

Now, it seems that fellow US carmaker Ford is headed in a very different direction after revealing plans to invest billions into EV production.

CEO Jim Farley has branded the move a ‘Model T moment for us at Ford’, ahead of sharing details of the upcoming affordable EV pickup.

“We took inspiration from the Model T – the universal car that changed the world,” chief EV digital and design officer Doug Field said.

“We think today will be a turning point for Ford Motor Company and the auto industry.”

Ford appeared keen to compete with cost-efficient rivals in China, by announcing a new $30,000 electric truck set to launch in 2027.

The four-door pickup will be built at the Louisville, Kentucky, plant, which is set to receive around $2 billion in investment.

Farley said the EV truck will have more passenger room than the new Toyota RAV4, which is currently America’s best-selling vehicle, as well as a frunk, and a full pickup truck bed.

The CEO also claimed it will be faster than the Ford Mustang twin turbo.

CEO Jim Farley admits it could be a ‘risk’

The planned investment will secure more jobs at Ford, Farley said, but he admitted that the whole project ‘is a risk’.

“There are no guarantees with this project,” Farley said

“We’re doing so many new things. I can’t tell you with 100 percent certainty that this will all go just right. It is a bet. There is risk.”

“The automotive industry has a graveyard littered with affordable vehicles that were launched in our country, with all good intentions, and they fizzled out with idle plants, laid off workers and red ink.

“And at Ford, three years ago, we set out to break that cycle.”
