Former Apple marketing director Florian Fournier has launched ambitious plans to build a sprawling high-tech ‘cyber city’ on Zanzibar Island.

The former Apple exec now works at OurWorld, alongside founders Kristof De Spiegeleer and Adnan Fatayerji.

The company has recently unveiled its bold plans to build Dunia Cyber City near the Fumba Peninsula on the western coast of Zanzibar.

The 175-acre site will be designed to attract tech workers and businesses, who will live and work alongside each other as part of a ‘network state’ of like-minded individuals.

The Dunia Cyber City will be able to house thousands of people

The cyber city will be developed with the hopes of attracting ‘forward-thinkers’ working across the tech and cryptocurrency industries.

However, the people behind the development are hoping for it to become a lot more than just a place to live or to work.

They want it to become a ‘network state’ – a term coined by cryptocurrency entrepreneur Balaji Srinivasan, and roughly describing an ideologically aligned community that bands together to form its own state.

“Together, we’re creating a new kind of city, one designed for regeneration, creativity, and connection,” OurWorld said in a statement.

“A place where people don’t just live and work, but belong, contribute, and grow. Where innovation is grounded in local context, guided by shared values, and built to serve both people and planet.”

The cyber city will have room to house between 5,000 and 7,000 residents, as well as being open to ‘e-residents’ from around the world, who will work and be able to claim residency at Dunia Cyber City while living elsewhere.

While the plans may sound ambitious, OurWorld has already joined forces with the government in Zanzibar to develop Dunia Cyber City.

“They want it to become for East Africa what Singapore became for South-East Asia,” Fournier said in an interview.

The development will have a value of $1bn in just two years

The 175-acre plot that is destined to become Dunia Cyber City is currently unused, but OurWorld says it could be worth a fortune after the development gets up and running.

According to Bloomberg, the plot of land is currently worth around $70 million, but De Spiegeleer says that in just two years of Dunia Cyber City opening, it could be worth as much as $1 billion.

Those who decide to buy land or property in the cyber city will be given their title deeds as digital tokens – a bit like NFTs, if you can remember them – that can be traded on the cryptocurrency market.

OurWorld and its partners are currently fundraising to get work underway, but as yet haven’t revealed a timeline, so watch this space.
