This Star Wars fan has created an incredible lightsaber, and showed us how we can make one too.

We’ve all wanted to be Luke Skywalker, but this YouTuber has gone the extra mile by producing a realistic version of the famous weapon.

Creator HeroTech has even made his design files available to those ready for a challenge.

This is no ordinary cosplay prop because it’s a fully functional, retractable blade with a movie-style speed and glow.

How HeroTech built a retractable lightsaber

His prototype went from a party trick to a full Jedi weapon because the YouTuber’s first attempt used a magician’s cane and a single LED strip, which looked cool but had major flaws.

It had an unlit gap in the middle of the blade, slow extension and retraction, and a plastic, oversized hilt that didn’t feel like a legitimate Jedi weapon.

How the lightsaber works

For his next version he used double LED strips, with no more dark gaps, so the blade was a solid glowing beacon from every single angle.

He added spinning blade technology, which added energy and glow, just like the original Star Wars in-camera effects.

Using a smart tension system, he made the LEDs stay tight while spinning, thanks to a clever motor hack.

He built in a mechanical clutch and a gyroscopic feel, which means the blade shoots out instantly, and the spinning inner hilt resists movement, making it feel heavy and real.

In the video, he had to burn through dozens of motor tests, but the clip gives the tech-savvy people of the world a great way to build their very own Jedi weapon.

This is the Lightsaber you’re looking for.
