There is a way for you to add Apple CarPlay to older cars.
And it might not be anywhere near as difficult as you might think.
The process involves a head unit and a few practical tools.
And it means that you will be able to enjoy Apple CarPlay even if you own an older car.

What is Apple CarPlay – and what does it do?
In case you’ve never heard of Apple CarPlay, allow us to give you the rundown.
Digital, hands-free multimedia displays are a common feature in most cars today.
But 10 years ago, it was literally unheard of – until Apple stepped in.
Apple introduced the CarPlay system at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.
Automakers Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo were the first three brands to be involved.
It included significant design changes from the earlier prototype that had been discussed.
Interestingly, the first car to be fully fitted with Apple CarPlay was a Ferrari FF.

And nearly every major car brand and model in the world followed suit.
Subsequent changes and updates to the iOS software have provided significant changes.
People can now receive text messages and phone calls whilst driving.
They can also use a fully-integrated Maps system – as well as all the apps one would normally use on their phone.
How to get in on the action if you own an older car
In case you happen to own an older car, don’t worry.
Because you can still install Apple CarPlay in your car if you want to.
So, how does the process work?
First, you need to find a head unit that supports wired and wireless CarPlay connectivity.
Most websites can match the year/model of car to a compatible display system.
They might even provide you a list of all the equipment needed for the installation process.
Once you have the equipment and the head unit, you can start the install.
In terms of tools, a screwdriver, wire stripper, crimp tool, and plastic pry tool should suffice for most older car Apple CarPlay installs.
To get started, you will need to disconnect the negative terminal of your car battery.
Next, you use the pry tool to remove all the trim around your current stereo, then remove any screws or bolts holding the head unit in place.

Disconnect the receiver from your vehicle’s wiring harness and antenna connections, then install the wiring harness adapter (make sure to crimp the connections).
Plug the adapter into the new stereo, then place it where the old one used to live and secure it with the new hardware.
Install your new trim kit to give the dash display a clean, precise look.
Reconnect the car battery, and your new Apple CarPlay system should fire up.
Once this is working, you can then get to work on customizing your new dashboard on the display.
