Tech guru claims iPhone updates drain battery health

The iOS 26 update brought forth some massive upgrades to the iPhone fleet, including the introduction of the long-awaited liquid-glass appearance.

The new look has been lapped up by fans, who have been customizing their homescreens and recording some impressive camera work.

While these all appear to be incredible new additions to the smartphone, one tech whizz has now urged people with current iPhones to err on the side of caution, as the iOS settings weren’t built for their hardware.

Popular YouTube personality Payette Forward claims that the liquid glass feature and other iOS settings are a ‘double-edged sword’ that will instantly drain your battery.

“Since the new iPhones don’t come out until Friday, everyone watching on launch day is running iOS on an iPhone that wasn’t built for liquid glass,” he said.

Apple previously admitted that this might be the case for older phones, and that’s why they have put so much emphasis on giving the iPhone 17 more juice than any of its products before.

So, how can you help your performance? Well, Payette Forward has made a number of different tips that you can do in your iOS 26 settings to help battery life.

What iOS 26 settings do you need to turn off?

Many of the new iOS 26 settings can help save battery without having a negative impact on your experience.

For starters, he mentions disabling Clean Energy Charging, which he says is more of a method for Apple to track your data.

Optimized Battery Charging was introduced to slow down your charging process in busy periods, but this can also be turned off to make sure you’re getting the best speeds when you need them.

He continued to claim that Adaptive Power Mode ‘throttles’ performance, and both Background App Refresh and Autoplay Video Previews are huge battery drainers and prevent endless streams.

As for general performance, Prioritize Faster Shooting should be turned off if you’re chasing quality photos over quantity, and Review Subscriptions lets you cancel unnecessary plans.

Of course, if you’re on the iPhone 17 train, well, new technology specifically improves performance and prevents overheating, so you should be fine.

But you can always optimize your iOS 26 settings like this to give your battery a longer lifespan.
