Irv Gordon is probably the most famous Volvo owner in the world, a status he achieved by driving his Volvo P1800 for over 3 million miles.
Irv bought the car new in the 1960s and basically drove it every day for decades.
At one point, he tried to sell the car back to Volvo.
The company had other ideas, but the outcome was better than he might have expected.
This is the world’s most iconic high-mileage car
All car brands have a reputation.
Performance, sturdiness, off-roading – each automaker is known for one or two things.
For Volvo, the two things are reliability and safety.
Historically, the Swedish automaker invested heavily in both, and also spent a significant amount of cash on marketing campaigns to prove it.
Here is a case in point.

In 1966, New York high school teacher Irv Gordon bought a new Volvo P1800 and drove it nearly every day for 52 years.
Today, the car’s odometer reads over 3 million miles – a record that still stands today.
He bought the car for $4,150.
Then, when he returned just days later for his first scheduled service, he’d already racked up 1,500 miles over a single weekend.
By 2013, Irv finally hit the 3-million-mile mark.
At some point, he tried to sell it back to Volvo.
And here’s what happened.

Irv offered it to Volvo for $1 a mile and they said no, but…
In an interview with the New York Post in 2016, Irv revealed what happened when he tried selling the car back to the car company.
“I offered it to Volvo for $1 a mile. [But] obviously, they didn’t take me up on it,” Irv laughed.
The automaker said no, but they were still impressed and decided to reward Irv for his incredible respect for the brand.
The Swedish manufacturer actually gave him a new car – a 780 Coupe – to celebrate the first million-mile mark.

The irony is that Gordon ended up putting 450,000 miles on that new 780 Coupe before selling it, while continuing to put daily miles on the P1800.
When Irv passed away in November 2018, his P1800 was acquired by Volvo, and the company decided to turn it into a museum piece.
The final recorded mileage, which at this point will remain unchanged, is exactly 3,260,257 miles driven.
