When this Lamborghini Murciélago faced off against a Volvo EX90 in a drag race, the result took everyone by surprise.

The hosts of carwow took a 2007 Murciélago out on a track against a seven-seat Volvo EX90 for a drag race, in addition to rolling and braking tests.

This Lamborghini was Mat Watson’s ‘hero car’, and it certainly seemed like a guaranteed win against the family car Volvo.

But if drag races have taught us anything at this point, it’s to expect the unexpected.

Why are drag races so popular online?

It seems like everywhere you look on YouTube, there’s two cars tearing it up on a track.

Why does this sub-genre of videos continue to rack up the views?

The answer is pretty obvious – people love to see which car can come out on top.

Sometimes the answer is blatantly obvious, as it was when this Tesla Model S Plaid faced off against a bone-stock Dodge Challenger.

But then there are times when the result is nothing short of unexpected – remember the time this scrapyard Audi A3 smoked a McLaren 570S?

The element of surprise is never too far away when it comes to drag races.

What happened when this Lamborghini Murciélago took on a Volvo EX90 in a drag race?

The Lamborghini was powered by a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 producing 640hp, while the Volvo was backed up by a twin-motor producing 680hp.

The clearest distinction between the two was in the weight – the Lambo weighed in at a lean 1.7 tons, which is significantly less than the 2.7 ton seven-seater Volvo.

You don’t have to be a car pro to have a good idea of which car seems like it has the edge in a race.

But out on the track, the Volvo – driven by Watson – won comfortably.

That’s right, the family SUV beat out a Lamborghini.

“This is it. It’s do or die. You will not be allowed on a Lamborghini Murciélago forum ever again if you don’t redeem yourself!” Watson teased his co-host ahead of the second round.

Fortunately, the Lamborghini won this time around – but only just.

In the third and fourth races, the Volvo won smoothly each time.

In an additional race, they decided to load up the Volvo with passengers, bringing the car’s total weight to 3.3 tons.

This cost the Volvo 0.8 seconds and gave a victory over to the Lamborghini.

Now it was time for a ‘redemption race’, with no extra weight or tricks.

This one was a close-run thing, but the Lamborghini just about won.

Which car would come out on top in braking and rolling tests? The Lamborghini Murciélago or the Volvo EX90?

There was time for some rolling races, in which the Volvo won on the first time around, and the Lamborghini clawed back a win on the second.

How about some brake testing?

The Volvo out-braked the Lamborghini from 100mph, at which point they decided to wrap things up begore putting too much strain on the Lamborghini.

What did we tell you? Drag races are all about the surprises.
