The Lotus Emeya EV SUV has smashed a charging record with a 443kW peak, showing that EVs can charge quickly despite customer concerns.

The charging times of an EV are always a talking point at the moment, as consumers feel like, more often than not, that they take too long.

Along with the Emeya hyper-GT, the British manufacturer has proven they can charge quickly thanks to a 450kW DC charger it has used in Kuwait.

This has set a new benchmark for public fast-charging, and could show other manufacturers the way forward.

What the Lotus Emeya was able to achieve

This particular test of the EV was completed by Lotus Al Ghanim.

Lotus Al Ghanim is the official dealer of Lotus in Kuwait, and they used the ultra-fast 450kW DC charger.

The dealer plugged the Lotus Emeya in, and it reached a max charging power of 443kW, almost the full capacity.

Incredibly, it was able to charge from 10 to 80 percent in just over 13 minutes and 30 seconds – beating its own record.

More impressive was how it reached this speed in extremely hot conditions in the region.

What it showed was how reliable and durable both the charger and the car were.

Both clearly worked incredibly well despite the heat, and it gives the company confidence in its electric cars.

It is also a vote of confidence in the Emeya itself.

The electric SUV has an excellent battery structure

The manufacturer is very proud of the battery structure within the electric car.

It has a cell-to-pack structure.

This means that 20 percent more cells can be packaged into the space versus a standard module architecture.

There is also a new cooling system architecture built into the system.

This is designed to improve thermal performance and efficiency for the battery.

The 800-volt charging system also allows for very rapid charging for the SUV.

It will have played a core role in the 13-minute charge time from 10 to 80 percent.

The company has also made this available on the Eletre hyper-SUV.

But it still falls short of how fast some Chinese EVs can charge.

Some of which do so in just a handful of minutes.

But this achievement by Lotus is still very impressive.
