A man racked up more than one million kilometers in his beloved Porsche 911 Turbo after spending decades behind the wheel.

Canadian Bill MacEachern first fell in love with the luxury marque back in 1970 after test-driving a red 911 T.

So much so that a short while later he bought himself a silver Porsche 911 to use as a company car.

However, his head was well and truly turned in 1972 when he first saw a turbocharged Porsche – a Porsche 917/10 at Can-Am race.

Bill knew he wanted a Porsche 911 Turbo as soon as he saw one

“Turbocharging was the new way to go — it seemed like rocket science at the time,” he told Porsche in 2017

With his heart now set on a turbocharged Porsche of his own, Bill was delighted when the carmaker started selling the 911-based 930 Turbo in Canada and quickly snapped one up.

Bill, who was previously the proud owner of an Oldsmobile 4-4-2 that ‘handled like a milk truck’, says the dealer initially tried to talk him out of purchasing the vehicle warning him that it was a powerful piece of kit.

But Bill knew what he wanted and stuck to his gun and, in 1976, he finally took delivery of the 911 Turbo — in deep Midnight Blue with a cork leather interior.

Nice.

It turned out to be a safe purchase for Bill who held onto the car for decades – slowly clocking up the miles on the road and on the race track.

He managed to clock up some incredible mileage

By 1981, Bill had put 88,713km (55,123 miles) on the odometer, and by 2006 this number had risen to 641,312km (398,492 miles).

He hit the milestone of one million kilometers in 2012 and celebrated with a bottle of bubbly.

“The car clicked over its one-millionth kilometer on the way to the famous swap meet in Hershey, Pennsylvania,” he said.

“And we had a little celebration with champagne toasts when I got back to Toronto.”

And, as of 2017, Bill and his Porsche were sitting at 1,165,937km (725,000 miles).

But Bill isn’t the only man to get some serious mileage out of his Porsche.

In the US, Guy Newmark put more than 1,609,344km (one million miles) on his Porsche 356.

Although they both still have quite some way to go before hitting the world record holding 5,230,781km (3,250,257 miles) clocked up by Irv Golding in his Volvo P1800S.
