This man revealed exactly how much he spends each month charging his two Teslas at home.

He owns a Model 3 and a Model Y, both of which are daily drivers for him and his wife.

It’s expected that a Tesla will save you money on gas, but his breakdown gives a clearer picture of the ‘electric’ cost of owning an EV

Optimizing the home charger setup

Many couples have traded their gas cars in for EVs, like this pair who save nearly $300 a month on gas.

YouTuber Travel Tesla Dad drives a Model 3, while his wife drives a red Model Y.

They have a double garage for their Teslas, so don’t have to risk their plugs being stolen at public charging stations.

The YouTuber’s wife only drives locally, so her Model Y is connected to a 120V Tesla Mobile Connector, which typically charges the car to 70% each day.

It’s an incredibly slow charge, but this low-voltage charger helps them to keep their electricity costs low.

Just how slow is it?

Plugged into the Mobile Connector, the Model Y will reach 80% from 69% in seven hours.

While that might sound far too slow, the YouTuber shared that since his wife doesn’t drive very far, it works perfectly well for them.

His Model 3, however, is plugged into a 240V Wall Connector, which was a referral gift.

To accommodate the 240V, his home had to have a 100-amp breaker added., which he paid an electrician $450 for.

This Tesla will reach 80% from 38% in 3 hours and 25 minutes—a rate of 31-32 miles of range an hour.

The cost of charging two Teslas

The YouTuber has a clever charging system, only charging his Model 3 after 9 pm during off-peak hours.

He shared his electrical bill for the month, which he added to his Tesla app.

This then breaks down how much of that was spent on home charging specifically.

The Model 3 cost $85 for the month, meaning he saved $113 on gas.

Meanwhile his wife’s Model Y cost a mere $45 a month, which works out to $205 saved on gas.

And if those savings aren’t impressive enough for you, you could always try the unlimited Tesla battery hack.

There’s no guarantee that will actually work, though…
