A Tesla owner who ended up with zero battery while out and about came up with an excellent plan to give his car a boost without using a public charger.

Range anxiety, the fear that an EV will run out of battery while miles from a charging station, is something electric car owners have to deal with.

But one Tesla owner was forced to battle that fear head-on when his EV ran out of charge far from home.

As he didn’t fancy waiting ‘three hours’ to charge it enough to get back home, he came up with an interesting plan and it worked without a hitch.

The plan to charge his flat Tesla battery worked like a dream

In a bid to combat range anxiety, carmakers are working on increasing battery capacity, like Mercedes-Benz, which is reportedly working on the ‘holy grail’ of EV batteries.

Meanwhile, Tesla has rolled out thousands of Supercharger stations

In 2021, Tesla owner and YouTuber Warped found himself in the ‘unthinkable’ situation of having no battery, miles from home.

“I went to a public charger and realised I had to wait three hours to get enough charge to get back home,” he explained in the clip.

So, he came up with his own solution.

He reckoned if he could tow his Tesla at speeds of around 70mph for 25 miles using the regenerative braking system, he would be charging his car’s battery at around 65,000 watts.

“That’s almost as much as a Tesla Supercharger,” he said.

In the clip, he admitted to this being a rather experimental plan, but nonetheless, he gave it a go with the help of a pal and a Mercedes-Benz E Class E55.

“I’m a little bit worried about the transmission overheating because 65,000 watts of horsepower is going to be the amount of braking force that the E55 has to overcome,” he said.

But it seems his fears were unfounded, as after managing to hit 70mph, he noticed the battery was ‘going up really fast’.

After a 25-mile trip, he had taken his battery from 14 percent to 55 percent, and he was left suitably impressed.

“If you’re stranded somewhere and you have absolutely no choice, now you know you might not actually be stranded after all,” he added.

What happens if you run a Tesla’s battery down to zero?

Tesla recommends never letting your EV drop below 20 percent.

One YouTuber discovered what happened if you drove it beyond that in an attempt to test the car’s range.

His Tesla began to shut down after it raced through its last seven percent of battery.

When the battery neared zero percent, it prompted the driver to ‘pull over safely’ while blocking any power inputs aside from steering and braking.

Once stopped, the dashboard remained active, although it would likely have gone to sleep once the car was safely idle.

In the end, much like Warped, the driver didn’t use a public charger to get back on the road; he was rescued by a Cybertruck using its PowerShare facilities.
