The trusty orange car driven by Marge Simpson has been a staple on the show for over 30 years – and is actually based on an American icon.

The blue-haired matriarch of the Simpson family has been in the news a lot recently.

Despite what headlines say, she isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

And neither is her reliable station wagon, which she’s been driving since the show’s beginnings back in 1989.

Marge Simpson: Her car is just as much an American icon as she is

The Simpsons has been on the air for nearly 36 years – and it’s still making headlines.

This week, reports began circulating that Marge Simpson, one of the show’s five main characters, had died.

This isn’t quite the full story, and we’ll leave it at that, as not to risk spoilers.

But at any rate, the show has been going on for a long time – and has been surprisingly influential in the world of cars.

In some ways, it predicted several trends in the automotive world before they came around.

And then there are cars made solely for the show that will forever be iconic – Mr Plow, anyone?

But how about a car that was in virtually every episode?

Sure, it wasn’t the most attention-grabbing, but it was always there.

We are, of course, talking about the orange station wagon that appears in the opening sequence of every episode.

You may recall that Marge drives the station wagon home and narrowly misses Homer as she pulls into the driveway. Although she seems to get him on occasion.

At any rate, the car bears a close resemblance to a 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle station wagon.

It’s not stated explicitly what model this car is meant to be on the show, but it’s old enough to use a carburetor over a fuel injection.

In one episode, Marge was struggling to start the car during a snowstorm, and Lisa advised her not to pump the gas too much or she would risk ‘flooding the engine’.

Given how stressed she was at the time, Marge didn’t take well to her daughter’s advice.

Iconic TV cars have been around for a while

It’s not just cartoon cars that have lodged themselves in our collective memories.

You might recall that there were quite a few cool cars that appeared on Friends over the years.

Then there was KITT from Knight Rider, which is still considered an American icon of the 80s. Or maybe Magnum PI’s Ferrari is more your style?

There have been lots of memorable cars to travel across our TV screens over the years, that’s for sure.
