In any major city across the world, speeding is a huge issue, but in NYC, it’s especially immense thanks to one super speeder.

But forget a single speeding ticket; there is a group of lucrative drivers racking up tickets in huge numbers.

One driver in particular of a Mercedes-Benz has racked up so many tickets that the amount he owes has almost hit six figures.

New data released has shown that this group of super speeders isn’t put off by the dent in their bank account from repeated offences.

The rise of the super speeders in NYC

The Big Apple is one of the biggest cities in the world, and with a population of over 8,000,000, the streets are swarmed with masses of cars every single day.

From parking fines to speed violations, the city sees a huge amount of road-related crime, and is ultimately home to a number of super speeder drivers.

But what does super speeder actually mean?

Well, the definition stands to be a ‘small number of drivers who are undeterred by repeatedly receiving speeding tickets and have received at least 16 tickets in a single year’.

New data released by Transportation Alternatives has revealed ticket data from speed and traffic cameras located all over the city.

The information shows the number of drivers who have managed to accumulate more than 16 tickets in a single year.

With a total of $10 million worth of speed tickets being tallied up in NYC, there are some huge contributors, with one driver really outdoing themselves.

The Mercedes-Benz super speeder almost hit six figures

One specific driver violated more speed limits than any other driver in NYC.

They drive a Mercedes-Benz driver, owe over $95,000 in fines, and have a mighty 511 violations.

Of these 511 violations, 510 took place in Manhattan, and one in Queens.

The driver achieved 75 speeding offenses, 238 bus lane violations, and 198 parking violations.

The Merc driver isn’t the only super speeder in the city, though, as the moniker has been given to many drivers, and among the 1,000 worst, the brands that are most commonly favored are Mercedes-Benz and BMW

There is a solution, though – a new bill conjured up by local officials.

“Passing the Stop Super Speeders bill will save lives and even save money for super speeders themselves – most of whom are spending thousands more on speeding tickets than they would on a speed limiter.

“We can’t let just a few New Yorkers put all of us at risk, and Albany can save lives by ensuring that Stop Super Speeders is in the final state budget,” Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives, Ben Furnas, said.

Now, even though this data is alarming, we should note here that these super speeder drivers represent less than one-half of one percent of New York City drivers.

Nevertheless, the news is still eye-opening.
