Everyone thought Mercedes was about to pull the plug on the A-Class.

The company had been talking about trimming its entry-level lineup, and the smallest of the group looked like an easy target.

But things behind the scenes have been moving in a very different direction.

Instead of disappearing, the A-Class might be coming back in a form nobody expected.

The electric A-Class Mercedes is preparing

The A-Class isn’t actually going anywhere.

In fact, the next generation is already being discussed inside the company.

And this time, electricity is likely to play a big role.

Mercedes Design Director Robert Lesnik hinted the replacement hatchback could arrive toward the end of the decade.

Current expectations suggest a debut around 2029, after the existing A-Class finishes an extended production run that could last until 2028.

The biggest change will be underneath the car.

The next A-Class is expected to ride on Mercedes’ new MMA platform, short for Modular Mercedes Architecture.

This is the brand’s upcoming foundation for compact cars, and it’s designed primarily for electric powertrains.

Because the next CLA will use the same platform, the manufacturer can share the technology across multiple models, which helps cut development costs while expanding its EV lineup.

However, the platform is flexible enough to support a hybrid too.

Mercedes has already developed a system designed to meet the stricter Euro 7 emissions rules expected later this decade.

Meanwhile, production of the current A-Class is expected to move to the brand’s Hungary plant, which reportedly won’t need major changes to build cars on the new architecture.

The brand is also changing how it names its EVs

At the same time, Mercedes is reconsidering its electric car naming strategy.

For years, the company separated EVs into the EQ family, creating models like the EQA, EQB, EQE, and EQS.

But the system hasn’t always been easy to follow, and the brand now seems ready to simplify things.

Instead of giving EVs completely different names, the brand plans to bring them back into the normal model lineup.

That means the future electric hatch will likely keep the A-Class name rather than becoming another EQ model.

Design-wise, it should also look more like a traditional hatchback.

Lesnik said the car will follow a ‘cab-back’ layout with a longer hood, closer to the upcoming CLA than the ultra-smooth shapes seen on cars like the EQE and EQS.

So while many people assumed the A-Class was heading for the exit, Mercedes may simply be preparing to reinvent it for the electric era.
