Men put absolutely wild mods on a 'soccer mom' car to turn it into a total off-roader

This heavily modified off-roader had once been just a regular BMW X5, the kind you’d expect to see doing school runs rather than climbing rocks.
Somewhere along the way, though, things got wildly out of hand in the best possible way.
What replaced that everyday SUV was a towering, trail-ready machine that looked more at home in the desert than a parking lot.
And as shown by the YouTube channel BigTime, the transformation ran far deeper than just appearances.

There were very few original BMW parts in this off-roader
The project centered around Mike, a mechanical engineer and fabricator who had taken on the challenge of turning a cheap daily driver into an all-purpose adventure rig.
He had originally picked up the BMW X5 for just $1,200, and drove it for years before deciding it deserved a second life as a modified off-roader.
Over the course of six intense months, he redesigned and rebuilt the SUV almost entirely from scratch, blending parts from multiple manufacturers into one cohesive machine.

Underneath, the changes had been nothing short of wild.
The X5 had been fitted with heavy-duty Ford Super Duty axles, massive 40-inch off-road tires, and a fully custom suspension setup featuring oversized coilovers more commonly seen on race trucks.

Nearly every mounting point had been designed in CAD and fabricated by hand, showing just how much precision and effort had gone into the build.
Then there was the engine.
Gone was the original BMW powertrain, replaced by a powerful LS-based V8 stroker pushing around 550 horsepower.
Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and not one but two transfer cases, the setup allowed for multiple crawl ratios, giving the SUV serious off-road capability.
Despite all that, Mike had still managed to keep some creature comforts intact, including air conditioning, making it surprisingly livable on the road.

It would beat most SUVs sold today in terms of performance
That dual-purpose nature had been a big part of the goal.
While the X5 handled city driving better than expected, it truly came alive off the pavement.
When the team took it out to Johnson Valley, the difference was obvious.

The massive tires clawed over rocks with ease, the suspension soaked up brutal terrain, and the vehicle tackled steep climbs and boulder fields that would stop most SUVs in their tracks.

Of course, it wasn’t perfect.
Mike openly admitted there were still quirks to iron out, including suspension geometry issues and a few lingering mechanical gremlins.
But even with those flaws, the BMW X5 had proven itself as a capable and wildly unique off-road machine.

If you feel inspired to do something similar on the cheap, just make sure you don’t accidentally buy this Chinese-made replica, because you get what you pay for.
