Nick Mason, a star that younger people may have not heard of, owns one of the most expensive cars in the world – the Ferrari 250 GTO.

Nick Mason is the drummer and founder member of Pink Floyd, but he is also an avid car collector.

He owns all kinds of valuable and rare cars, including the Ferrari 250 GTO, which ended up becoming the world’s most expensive car.

But back then, when he bought it, it wasn’t that expensive.

How Nick Mason got a Ferrari 250 GTO for a steal

In 2022, a Mercedes 300 SLR prototype sold for $142 million, thus surpassing the Ferrari 250 GTO on this particular list.

But the Ferrari 250 GTO is still one of the world’s most expensive cars, with a market value north of $50 million in today’s market.

The thing is, the 250 GTO is worth tens of millions today, but it cost Nick Mason a lot less than that.

Mason bought his Ferrari 250 GTO in 1977, and he only paid £35,000 for it, or $44,000.

While it is true that $44,000 in 1977 is still equivalent to $228,000, that’s still a great deal for a car worth eight figures today.

Nick Mason’s passion for cars

Nick Mason isn’t just a car collector, he’s also a car racer.

He’s raced several classic cars, and he’s taken part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans five times, namely in 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1985.

He used four different cars for those five races.

He completed the first two races at the wheel of a Lola Ford-Cosworth twice, and then a BMW M1, a Dome Ford-Cosworth and a Porsche 956.

Among others, he’s also raced the Alfa Romeo 8C, Bugatti Type 35, Jaguar D-Type, Ferrari 250 LM and Ferrari BB LM.

Not bad for a guy who only does this in his free time.
