An American woman on TikTok had an unusual yet amusing experience after she took her car in for her first-ever oil change and was asked to rev her engine.
TikTok user @spammyspamacnt shared the experience on her account, which followed a mechanic asking her sister to rev the engine.
Some fellow TikTok users came out in support of the American and were left slightly surprised by the mechanic’s request.
The video has now received well over 600,000 views and nearly 70,000 likes on the social media platform.

The mechanic asked the woman to rev her engine
The American woman in the car explained that her sister had taken the car in for an oil change, which was the first time she had done so.
While the oil change was in progress, the mechanic asked her to rev her engine to 2,000RPM.
This was an unusual request, as oil changes don’t usually require the driver to rev the engine.
However, as a young driver, the American woman wasn’t entirely certain about the request the mechanic had made.

The mechanic had also told the woman to rev the engine and hold it for about two seconds.
It was at this point which point the woman started to laugh in the video.
The woman said that her sister revved the car up to 5,000RPM while her sister tried to say: ‘It was like three.’
Revving an engine during an oil change isn’t necessary
As she mashed the gas pedal, the engine revved high, and the woman imitated the sound of her sister’s car.
It didn’t take long for other car owners and TikTok users to voice their support for her sister.
One user said: “To be fair, no one has ever asked me to do that, and I also would not know what that means.”
Another said that while the mechanic was changing the oil, she had turned the car on, and the mechanic screamed to turn the engine off.

Revving an engine and doing an oil change is usually not required.
Some mechanics may ask you to do so to help the oil circulate or to check for leaks.
But it isn’t standard practice, and it may actually prove harmful to your car’s engine.
So, if you ever hear the request, perhaps query the mechanic and ask if it is really necessary.
