Pininfarina: the most important car designer of all time?

If you happen to be a gearhead, then the name Pininfarina will almost certainly be a familiar one.

In case you don’t know, the brand is an Italian, Turin-based coachbuilder and car design company.

The firm is most famous for its creative partnership with Ferrari.

It is a relationship that has thrived and endured for more than 74 years.

Back in 1951, Enzo Ferrari and Battista Farina met in the small Italian town of Tortona.

The meeting went so well that the two men agreed to partner on crafting the finest cars possible.

And it endured as one of the most successful and fruitful partnerships in automotive history.

The partnership has produced cars including the Ferrari 250 GT, the 365 GTB/4 Daytona, the Testarossa and the F40.

Italian marque collaborates with Porsche purist

Recently, Pininfarina made news – but for a slightly different reason this time.

Instead of making news for one of its designs, the firm is forming a new partnership.

Specifically, the collaboration in question is with a man called Magnus Walker.

For those who don’t know, Magnus Walker is a famed Porsche collector and customizer.

The ‘Beardo Weirdo’, as he is known, came to collaborate with Pininfarina in a very cool way.

Davide Amantea, the chief design officer for Pininfarina, was at Monterey Car Week in 2022.

He was presenting the Battista to a small group, and happened to be wearing a pair of shoes designed by Walker.

This served as a natural topic of conversation between the two, and the start of the collaboration.

After respective visits to Italy and Los Angeles, Amantea invited Walker to work on a one-off Battista.

The finished product is something truly beautiful to behold, but it came with its challenges.

Amantea described how he had to translate Walker’s vision – because he could do what official designers could not.

The Italian said ‘the way Magnus knows how to do things pinstripes and color, our painters couldn’t do’.

Magnus’ design on the exterior included many vertical stripes, offering a sense of acceleration on a sleek, curved body design.

Walker explained how having to learn to compromise also helped him to grow as an artist and a designer.

David Amantea described the final product as embodying ‘Irreverent Elegance’.

And, whatever that means, we think we definitely agree with him.
