Porsche Taycan sets Guinness World Record for drifting on ice

The Porsche Taycan GTS is the proud owner of a brand-new Guinness World Record after it drifted for a mind-boggling 17.503km (almost 11 miles) on ice.

The all-electric was taken out to the Porsche Arctic Centre in Levi, Finland, where the Porsche team put it through its paces on the ice.

Instructor Jens Richter was behind the wheel during the record attempt.

He managed to absolutely obliterate the old record of 14.809km (9.2 miles).

It’s another title for the Porsche Taycan GTS

The Porsche Taycan already holds the unusual titles of the first EV to feature in a Hollywood car chase and the greatest altitude change by an electric car – and now it’s added another offbeat record to its name: the longest uninterrupted drift of an electric car on ice.

But achieving the record wasn’t all plain sailing, due to difficult external conditions, the ice deteriorated faster than the team expected and the first attempt had to be aborted at around 11km (6.8 miles).

Undeterred, the team switched to shorter spikes and waited until nightfall – when the temperature dropped – to carry out the successful second attempt.

This time around, Richter was able to keep the Porsche Taycan GTS in a controlled drift for a total of 17.503km (10.8 miles) – or 132 laps of the track – using only throttle and steering interventions.

Impressive, right?

The Taycan smashed through the previous record

The Porsche Taycan was an unmodified stock vehicle fitted with commercially available Michelin tires with one-millimeter spikes and a professional GPS system to help accurately record the distance traveled.

The winning record attempt, which is 2.694km (1.6 miles) further than the previous title holder, took 46 minutes.

“With our new Guinness World Records title on ice, the Taycan has once again proven its sideways driving qualities,” Richter said in a statement

“And this time even with all-wheel drive. The fact that the Taycan GTS can be controlled so well even under extreme conditions speaks volumes for its excellent chassis and balanced performance.”

With three records under its belt, the Porsche Taycan GTS is making quite the name for itself.
