A family in Nebraska had a rare 1967 GT500 Shelby Mustang parked up in their barn for more than 40 years.

For the 1967 model year, Shelby introduced the GT500 – an even more powerful option than its pre-existing GT350.

Only 2,050 examples were made that year, meaning it’s quite rare to see one out and about and even rarer to discover one in a barn.

But that’s exactly what happened to a man named Dan Bailey.

The Shelby GT500 spent decades in a barn

There are several interesting examples of rare Shelbys cropping up in barn finds, such as this GT350 that was found after 48 years, or this one-off 1967 GT500 prototype that disappeared for decades.

Meanwhile, sitting gathering dust in a barn in Nebraska was this stunning example discovered by Bailey.

After the discovery, Bailey reached out to car-lover and YouTuber Jerry Heasley, as he knew he was keen to get his hands on one.

A team of Shelby experts flew out to take a closer look at the car and found the whole thing was a bit of a puzzle – literally, with various pieces of the car stowed away alongside it.

A search of the barn revealed the car’s dash pad, sun visor, gauges, seat belts, rear brake shoes, and shoulder harnesses.

With that said, the car wasn’t in too bad of a state – although the engine, transmission, and rear end were all gone.

The car had an interesting past

Prior to ending up at the barn, the Shelby had apparently been used for drag racing.

As such, it had sustained damage to its fenders and taken a whack to the front end.

One of the owner’s sons explained that his dad had bought the car in 1982 and had planned to restore it.

But four decades on, the car was still in the same state as when his dad had bought it.

While checking out the barn, the team also uncovered the 1982 title deed that showed the miles on the Shelby’s clock had remained unmoved since it was bought.

After checking out the numbers on the front end, the expert confirmed the Shelby GT500 was the real deal.

With that confirmation, Heasley happily snapped up the car and planned to restore it to its former glory.
