The rarest Porsche ever is definitely a car you wouldn’t expect.

If you were asked to visualize the most elusive Porsche, your mind might go to some interesting places.

The Porsche 968 Turbo S might take you by surprise.

But why is that this car is so rare?

The rarest Porsche isn’t what you might expect

The Porsche 968 Turbo S was a variant of the 968 model, which was launched in 1992.

Upon launch, the 968 suffered from poor sales, so Porsche began thinking of a back-up.

The Turbo RS was already being offered for drivers in the ADAC GT Cup competition.

The Turbo S was the homologation model, meaning it was built for the road.

For a start, the name is a bit of an odd one.

The ‘S’ is usually reserved for cars that have been tuned for models that have been tuned to pack more power over a ‘lesser’ counterpart.

The 968 Turbo S basically has the same body and interior as the Club Sport.

Originally, 100 were planned, but only 14 ended up being produced between 1992 and 1994 – including the prototype.

They each went for $106,000.

Each one was powered by a 3.0 lire engine with a 8-value SOHC cylinder head from the 944 Turbo S.

Usually, Porsche put its engines in the back of the car, but the 968 Turbo S has it front and centre.

According to tests conducted in 1993, the car could reach 60mph in 4.7 seconds and maintain a top speed of 175mph.

It had a horsepower of 305 and a maximum torque of 369Ib-ft.

Rare cars are a dime a dozen

We’ve seen a lot of rarities over the years.

Nissan has a car so rare that even its CEO wasn’t allowed to touch it, whilst the rarest Aston Martin looked something like a DeLorean.

Each brand has a model that is few and far between – for Tesla it’s the first-generation roadster, whilst it’s the M3 GTR in BMW’s roster.
