Richard Hammond is certainly enjoying his post-Grand Tour career, mostly because he still gets to drive amazing cars such as this Ford Mustang Dark Horse.
His workshop (which is also a TV show), The Smallest Cog, serves as the perfect ‘excuse’ to buy and sell cars all the time.
And he certainly does.
His latest acquisition is a Mustang Dark Horse that’s actually more powerful than nearly anything else he owns.
Richard Hammond might be the most American Brit ever
For years, both during the Top Gear era and the Grand Tour era, Clarkson and May made relentless fun of Hammond for being too ‘American.’
It became a recurring joke on the show, and to be fair Hammond reinforced it more than once by owning and driving one American car after the other.
In 2021, the trio headed to Scotland for a Grand Tour episode (titled ‘Lochdown‘) with three American cars, and Hammond was the only one who actually kept his car – a 1971 Buick Riviera – after the episode.

He’s also used a Dodge Charger Hellcat and a Ford Ranger Raptor as company cars on DriveTribe, and in 2008, he bought a Dodge Challenger SRT-8 for a Top Gear road trip because Dodge wouldn’t lend the show a press car.
More importantly, he’s owned several Mustangs.
Including the one you see here.
This is possibly the most powerful Mustang he’s ever owned

We don’t know whether Ford would grant a Mustang GTD allocation to Hammond if he wanted one, and we won’t find out for now because Hammond did something else.
Instead of buying the most powerful production Mustang ever – the GTD – he bought one that’s in some ways even more extreme – the Dark Horse – and modified it.
As standard, the Dark Horse ‘only’ makes 500 horsepower, but the one modified for him now puts out 867 horsepower and 658lb-ft of torque after the addition of a massive supercharger borrowed from the Coyote V8.

Interestingly, despite being a lot faster and more brutal than before, Richard Hammond still described the Dark Horse as the perfect everyday car.
Well, some people use Ferrari Enzos and Lamborghini Murciélagos as daily drivers, so anything goes.
