Once edam a time, brie-fore Tesla, EVs weren’t very gouda. That is, except for the Sebring CitiCar, a cheese wedge car that was the best-selling EV in America, and should, still-to(n) this day, be recognized as car royalty.
While cracks have begun to show in its armor this year, Tesla has been the king for this entire generation of electric cars.
That is, in America at least, as new rivals from China have usurped the throne in Europe.
But just as BYD is doing to Tesla, Tesla did to Sebring, as this wild Pythagoras-looking cheese block was once the top dog.

Once the best-selling EV in America: the Sebring CitiCar
Nowadays, the best-selling EV in America is the Tesla Model Y, which was even the most-bought car in the world until a Japanese export took over this year.
While the Chevrolet Equinox is giving it competition from within America, BYD is already surpassing it on a global scale.
But back in the 1970s, the Sebring CitiCar was leading the way as the best-selling EV in America, despite it looking like a cheese wedge car.
With a body like a Laughing Cow wedge and an adorable 6V battery, the Sebring CitiCar was one of the earliest cars to ever feature a fully-electric powertrain.

Hailing from Florida, the cheesy block had 4,444 units made, selling at around $4,500 (not a bad way to make a cool two mil in the ’70s).
But, as you can imagine, they’re very few and far between in the modern day.
Which makes it all the more special that one YouTube personality has landed one and is giving it a full restoration.
Key Features: Sebring CitiCar
Powertrain: 48V motor producing up to 6HP
Top Speed: ~35-40MPH
Range: 40 miles
Drive Modes: Single-speed manual transmission
Starting Price: $4,500 in 1975
Man restores this age-old cheese wedge car
YouTube channel Unnecessary Inventions has been hands-on with the car, bringing it back to life.
In this rebuild, much of it was aesthetic, as you would imagine with a car of this age.
However, the were also a few structural repairs to be made to the plastic, and a new 12V battery was fitted, which meant it’s probably the most powerful Sebring CitiCar out there.

With a Porsche Miami Blue paint job, paying homage to its Floridian background, the once best-selling EV in America is now primed to hit the roads again and show people why it paved the way for Tesla and co.
