A skipped ‘shake test’ went viral after a mechanic’s Chevrolet pickup truck slipped off a lift and nearly totaled the truck.
A video on TikTok from mechanic Connor went viral on the social media platform, and it showed him and a coworker looking at a Chevy pickup truck that has slid off the lift.
It prompted the two to question what went wrong and any mistakes made, while urging others to never skip a shake test.
What makes it even more alarming is that, having skipped the test, this pickup truck was nearly written off.

What is the shake test that was skipped?
The shake test is a simple procedure performed before a vehicle is lifted up to a certain height.
After the arms are positioned and the vehicle is raised off the ground, the truck is rocked side-to-side to make sure it is balanced and secure on the lifting pads.
Major shaking indicates that the car is not secure, and then steps can be taken to make sure it is.

This step isn’t part of an official Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirement.
But it is relatively common practice among mechanics and those working on cars at garages.
Doing it prevents any calamities, and there is never an issue with a vehicle.
However, this is what happens when the test is skipped.

The video posted by Connor shows the Chevrolet after the unfortunate incident on the lift.
Clearly a bit shaken, Connor’s colleague asks if it means they ‘can’t go on an early lunch’.
It quickly became apparent that an early lunch would not be an option here.
What the incident shows is that even everyday repairs carry some form of risk.
Not only could the car or truck be badly damaged, but it could also injure those working on it.
Skipping this check can save a little bit of time.
However, what we see on TikTok just goes to show that trying to save time isn’t always a good idea.
No doubt they will learn from their mistake, and likely not skip the test again.
