This traffic stop instantly went viral when a Smart car driver was pulled over while attempting to haul a comically large ladder.

Police in Ontario pulled over a Smart ForTwo after spotting a ladder more than twice the length of the tiny car sticking out the back.

Officers said it was balanced from the dashboard and tied down with rope, creating an obviously dangerous road hazard.

And when you see photos of the situation, you might find it difficult to disagree.

A not so Smart car driver

The Smart ForTwo car is only around 98 inches long, which already tells you a lot about why this set up went so wrong.

Photos from the scene show the giant ladder stretching out the trunk of the Smart ForTwo, with the front pushed deep into the cabin.

The Police Officers reported that the driver had no proper securing mechanism, relying on a bit of rope and a lot of hope to keep the giant ladder in place.

Ontario police didn’t waste any time issuing a ticket for an insecure and unstable load that could have slipped into the road at any moment, but it isn’t the first time the police have stepped into a crazy car scenario.

According to local reports, the situation got attention fast because the proportions looked so extreme and the oversized load was causing some issues, like this bull found as a passenger in a truck on the freeway.

The ladder appeared to be in the 18 to 20 foot range, and considering the smart car measures just 8.8 feet (2.69 meters) in length, it looked even more extreme.

A ladder to disaster

This isn’t the first time a Smart ForTwo has been pushed beyond its limits by overconfident owners.

The car is designed for cities like Ontario, short commutes, and light errands, not heavy-duty hauling, but this Smart moonlighting as a pickup was a bit of a fail.

The visual of a comically large ladder hanging out the trunk of a microcar was enough to make it viral.

It also served as a reminder that safe loading rules exist for a reason.

The Smart ForTwo may be a smart decision if you live in a busy city, but even smart cars can’t save drivers from poor decisions.
