SpaceX has taken delivery of hundreds of unsold Tesla Cybertrucks and is expected to take in thousands more.

With a production capacity of 250,000 a year and around 20,000 being sold, there are a lot of Cybertrucks to go around.

As sales have slumped and the Cybertruck has dropped to third in pickup rankings, Elon Musk has had to think of a way around the situation.

Selling to SpaceX appears to be the solution.

Why has SpaceX taken in hundreds of unsold Tesla Cybertrucks?

It’s no secret that the Cybertruck has been struggling to sell this past year or so.

Sure, the truck has always been somewhat divisive due to its design, but sales have really slumped recently.

Sale figures for 2025 indicated that only 4,306 were sold in the second quarter of 2025, pushing it into third place behind the Ford F-150 Lightning and Hummer EV.

Tesla has tried to get consumers to buy the pickup in multiple ways, including through major offers, but troubles persisted.

It’s not looking good, and Tesla will need to think of a long-term strategy to deal with the thousands of Cybertrucks left over.

In the meantime, Elon Musk opted to have SpaceX buy hundreds of Cybertrucks and have them delivered to Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas.

They were also delivered to the Starlink factory in Bastrop, Texas.

Electrek reported that several truckloads of Cybertrucks were also delivered to xAI’s offices in recent days.

Wes Morrill, the Cybertruck lead engineer, spoke positively of the deal which sees SpaceX’s support fleet being filled with Cybertrucks.

“Love to see the ICE support fleets from Tesla and SpaceX get replaced with Cybertruck,” he said.

“When we were engineering it, this was always part of the dream. Never imagined how hard the fleet photos at Starbase would go. Looking forward to more of this.”

As of yet, there’s been no word on how many more are due to arrive in the coming weeks.

At SpaceX, the Cybertrucks are expected to serve engineering team and operations staff, Green Drive News reported.

Why has the Cybertruck been struggling?

Sales of 4,306 units in the second quarter of 2025 is a 50 percent decrease from the same period in 2024.

Why have things taken a downward trajectory for Tesla Cybertrucks?

There’s several factors to consider.

Well, the Cybertruck was already controversial due to its unorthodox shape and design, so it did start at somewhat of a disadvantage.

Factor in a high asking price that was only ever going to increase after the $7,500 Federal EV tax credit expired.

When cheaper and more conventional options are available, the average buyer is more likely to go with an alternative.
