Despite being 21 years old, a used 2005 Mercedes CL65 AMG just sold for the same price as a Ferrari, and people can’t believe it.

If you had a spare $300k to splash on a sports car – oh, what a life – what would you get?

Most mainstream people might immediately turn their attention to the likes of a McLaren 750S, a Ford Mustang GTD, or even a Porsche 911 Turbo S.

But one person has just dropped the three-ton figure on a 21-year-old Mercedes CL65 AMG, in one of the most unexpected online auctions in recent memory.

2005 Mercedes CL65 AMG sale leaves people baffled

Mercedes’ C-class range has been a flagship stalwart of the European muscle market for decades, rivalling BMW and Audi on every dealership floor.

One of the pinnacle models was the CL65 AMG, boasting an extraordinary powertrain and leaving fans swooning over its incredible downforce and traction.

Brand new, this car was valued at $182,280, although most models now sell for around $40K on auction sites like Bring a Trailer.

However, the gavel has just been slammed on a $300K bid for one pristine relic that has only managed 3,000 miles in its 21 years.

The car boasts a twin-turbocharged 6.0-Liter V12, a five-speed AMG automatic transmission, and double-spoke anthracite-finished wheels, all of which are factory new.

The window sticker from its sale is still visible, showing just how little this car has moved.

Adjusting for inflation, the original $182,280 from 2005 would now be worth $333,595, meaning that this sale almost loses money, but its wild fee still seems to be far-fetched, knowing how the market has shifted.

“This made no sense,” one BaT comment read.

Another added: “Just cause you have money doesn’t mean you’re smart.”

Others claimed that this rare purchase is actually a smart investment, and it could continue to drive prices of other Mercedes cars up.

With the rarity of the car, it’s likely that this will stay at its low mileage state and could even appear on the auction block in its brand-new state in another 21 years’ time.

New Merc C-class models are ten times cheaper

What’s possibly more interesting is that the new CLA is actually just ten percent of the price of this Mercedes CL65 AMG.

The new Chinese EV even rivals the older car for acceleration and top speed, making the investment that much more intriguing.

Almost serving as a backhanded insult to the EV era, there’s clearly a massive market for older combustion models that excelled in power and precision.

Here’s hoping that the new owner of the Mercedes CL65 AMG will enjoy their art-piece, as you can guarantee they won’t be adding many miles on the clock and depreciating this time capsule with a cheeky joyride.
