This Ford F-150 Lightning needed some serious TLC, so one mechanic stepped in to help the EV get another shot at life on the road.

Once one of the most favored pickups in the country, the F-150 is used by many thousands of people across the US, but sadly, this one was in desperate need of a new battery.

After only charging to a certain amount, a plan was needed to help the EV pickup live on, which is where one YouTuber came in.

Once the switch was made, the process proved to highlight one harsh reality – and you may be in agreement too.

This Ford F-150 Lightning needed a helping hand

The Ford F-150 Lightning EV pickup is beloved by many drivers, but we bet you’ve not seen a battery swap like this before – more on that later.

Over on the Out of Spec Renew channel, the creator was faced with the task of swapping out the battery on a 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning.

With over 140,000 miles on the clock, the YouTuber explained that he’d first had a look at the truck a couple of weeks prior.

But now it was back, and would only charge to around 50 percent, which was a less than ideal scenario.

Unfortunately, the mileage meant that the truck was out of warranty, so the maker wouldn’t help, and it was left to the YouTuber to breathe new life into the F-150.

Instead of the previous standard range battery pack, the plan was to install an extended range battery pack with a capacity of around 131 kWh instead.

Once the battery was disconnected and the bolts removed, the time came for the upgrade.

We should note here that when the new extended range battery pack arrived, there were damaged connectors, and other elements with minor cosmetic damage were also present.

So the YouTuber had the added task of swapping the front connectors from the old battery onto the new one to see if it would work.

As luck would have it, the plan worked, and after realigning all of the car’s elements, the truck powered up.

The success continued as when a DC fast-charge test took place, the battery was back to charging beyond 50 percent once more.

But then another unfortunate reality hit.

An unfortunate reality came to light

After taking all of the steps and overcoming the challenges, one big thing was evident.

The battery swap was actually one of the easiest pack upgrades, and it could have come in handy for future models.

“It couldn’t have gone easier,” explained the creator.

Sadly, the reality of Ford discontinuing the car comes into play here, with many viewers also disappointed that the Ford F-150 Lightning was cancelled.

Once among the most popular cars in the country, the truck’s ending is sad for many.

Don’t worry just yet, though, as even though the Lightning is no more, the CEO of Ford recently revealed all new plans for a new pick-up in the near future.

At least current owners of the EV pickup have a new and reinforced hope that even if something were to go wrong with the battery, there is an easy fix.
