Apple’s upcoming iPad updates seem to focus on performance chips over flashy features, and it sounds like Apple is keeping things very, very simple this time.
According to a new report, fresh base iPad and iPad Air models are launching soon, but don’t expect a big redesign.
Instead, Apple seems to be doubling down on what it does best: faster silicon and smoother performance.
If you were hoping for shiny new features across the board, this update looks more like the real upgrades are happening under the hood rather than on the surface.

Apple’s upcoming iPad updates focus on performance chips first
When it comes to Apple’s upcoming iPad tech updates, don’t expect to be wowed by amazing aesthetic changes.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple is preparing an entry-level iPad with the A18 chip, moving up from the A16.

That jump is more than a spec sheet enhancement because it should bring Apple Intelligence support to the base iPad for the first time.
The iPad Air is also in line for a chip upgrade, reportedly stepping from M3 to M4.
It’s serious laptop-level power, but the big question is whether most iPad Air buyers will actually feel the difference when streaming, browsing, or studying.

Expect minimal design changes
If you love dramatic redesigns, this is where the hype dies down.
The report suggests no major external changes are coming, with the iPad Air sticking to its current design language and the base iPad staying largely the same, too.
And some of the most-requested premium upgrades are apparently not happening: the iPad Air is not expected to gain Face ID or ProMotion, and the base iPad is not expected to get a laminated display – yet.

There’s also mention that both models could pick up an N1 chip, similar to other devices, which sounds like a behind-the-scenes connectivity or efficiency upgrade rather than something you’d notice instantly.
So if you’re deciding whether to wait, the vibe here is: wait for the base iPad if Apple Intelligence is a must-have, but don’t expect these updates to suddenly transform what an iPad feels like.
This is Apple doing tinkering under the hood rather than anything spectacular.
